Teach English in Ecuador by volunteering at the San José school in the city of Tena, which is located in the middle of the Amazon rainforest. The school is understaffed and relies on volunteers to assist the sole English teacher employed there, as well as to provide support to teachers of other areas such as music, dance, art, sport and computer skills. Volunteers also spend time helping disadvantaged children with their homework, teaching them how to use the computer, and providing them with experience in certain art and craft forms so that they can learn skills for future employment. If your passion is to work with children and you require hands-on experience to fulfill your dream, while living in spectacular natural surroundings, then this volunteer opportunity is perfect for you.

Amazon volunteering teach3

As a volunteer, you’ll get to:

  • Assist the school’s English teacher by correcting students’ English pronunciation and grammar.
  • Do intensive English teaching with a highly motivated group of students who are taking the International Baccalaureate, and so need to be completely fluent in English.
  • Play an important role in educating local disadvantaged children after school at the Centro Preventivo Ubaldo Bonucelli, where volunteers teach computer skills, baking, various arts and crafts and cooking, as well as helping with homework.
  • Practice your Spanish by living and working in a typical South American city.
  • Live in a city in the middle of the Amazon that is popular with tourists – so another English speaker will never be too far away.
  • Spend time in nature during your spare time, with some of Ecuador’s best rafting and kayaking on your doorstep.

Work & Impacts

TEACHING ENGLISH

Your primary role will be as an assistant to the school’s English teacher. One teacher cannot adequately educate an entire school without some help, especially when it comes to individual students’ pronunciation and grammar. With your help, the San José students will become more fluent and more confident in their use of the English language, which will help them to secure jobs in future.

You will also give one-on-one help to a group of International Baccalaureate students who function on a high academic level. They need to be fluent in English in order to pass, and having you to guide them on the quirks and nuances of English will be invaluable for them.

TUTORING DISADVANTAGED CHILDREN

Working at the center for children from poor communities might be the most rewarding part of your volunteer experience. You’ll coach and tutor these kids after school in all kinds of subjects and skills – from bread-making to computer skills – in order to prepare them for a successful future.

In helping them with their homework, you will also be giving them one-on-one attention that they might not receive anywhere else.

Fun & Travel

Things to do in your spare time

RELAX

As a volunteer on this project, your days will be long. Teaching is incredibly draining, and your additional duties at the center for disadvantaged children in the afternoons means that you won’t have much time to spare during the week. On the weekends, you may just want to sleep in, write home, and gather your strength for the upcoming week.

HEAD INTO THE RAINFOREST

If you’ve got energy to spare, take advantage of Tena’s proximity to the rainforest by going river rafting, kayaking or on a guided day-tour into the jungle. The Jatunyako River delivers loads of fun and adventure for thrill-seeking white-water rafters, and there are a number of great hikes you can do up into the Andes mountains that surround Tena.

LEARN HOW CHOCOLATE IS MADE

Find out about tours into cacao plantations where you can see the origin of Ecuador’s most up-and-coming natural resource: chocolate!

GO CAVING

A labyrinth of natural caves and underground tunnels extend miles below the earth – they’re just waiting for you to explore their depths! You’ll find the Cuevas de Jumandy north of Tena, near the small, 600-year-old colonial town of Archidona (itself worth a visit – it serves the nearby Kichwa communities and is home to some incredible traditional festivals).

SEE A VOLCANO UP CLOSE

The Sumaco Volcano is the highest point of the isolated Sumaco Napo-Galeras National Park. You’ll need to find a guide to take you through the ravines and dense jungle that surrounds Sumaco – this can be an adventure in itself. The experience, once you get there, may be the most intense thing you do in Ecuador.

ABOUT TENA

About tena

About the Destination

Tena is a mid-size city and the capital of the Napo Province. It’s become a major commercial center. It is well-served by buses and even has its own airport.

A lot of tourists visit Tena as the jumping-off point to the adventures the Amazon holds, and being based here will give you plenty of access to jungle, kayak and river tours. It might not be the most picturesque of all Ecuadorian cities, but “the cinnamon capital” is known for its friendly population and its beautiful views of jungle-covered mountains to the west.
