Help to conserve Fiji’s coral reefs and marine ecosystems by becoming a marine conservation volunteer. You’ll do regular dives in the crystal-clear waters of the South Pacific Ocean, travel to traditional Fijian visitors, learn new dive skills, and contribute to community development, all while living on a research base on the idyllic Caqalai Island. If you have a passion for marine biology and want to make a tangible impact on the future of one of the world’s most renowned and delicate marine ecosystems, this would be the ideal project for you.

Floating in space

As a volunteer, you’ll get to:

  • Learn to scuba dive.
  • Gain a higher diving qualification if you are already a scuba diver.
  • Live and work with fellow volunteers from all over the world who are just as enthusiastic about life under the sea as you are.
  • Join an expedition that focuses on collecting important data on underwater research dives.
  • Make a real impact on the conservation and preservation of marine ecosystems by contributing to a project that gives local communities and organizations the data they need to make responsible management decisions.
  • Play a role in providing long-term benefits to the local communities, especially when it comes to food security for future generations.
  • Immerse yourself in the Fijian way of life and even learn to speak a little Fijian.
  • Learn to accurately identify local fish and coral species.
  • Live in one of the most idyllic places on Earth, spending your free time exploring the beaches, jungles and waters of a real-life tropical paradise.

Research

RESEARCH

Volunteers conduce one or two snorkels or dives per day, five days a week, during which they do underwater surveys to locate and gather data on targeted fish species and kinds of coral. They also do habitat mapping of coral reefs and mangroves.

Community work

COMMUNITY WORK

Environmental awareness and education is an important pillar in this project, as it is vital for ensuring that future generations of local communities conserve their natural resources. You will be giving classes in environmental awareness to local schoolchildren when you are not in the water.

Assisting with developing environmental best practice

ASSISTING WITH DEVELOPING ENVIRONMENTAL BEST PRACTICE

On this project, you will assist in providing the Fiji Department of Fisheries and the Fiji Locally Managed Marine Area Network with the data they need to draft sound environmental policies. This helps to ensure that the policies benefit not only the marine ecosystems but also the wider community.

Fun & Travel

Things to do in your spare time

Waterbased fun

WATER-BASED FUN

As an island destination, Fiji offers many, many opportunities for fun and adventure on the ocean. While you are on-project, you can take a short boat ride to visit the famous pod of Spinner dolphins that live on Moon Reef; go diving in one of Fiji’s world-class dive locations, home to abundant corals and marine life; go snorkeling right off the beach; or simply take a dip in the warm sea if the heat gets too much for you.

Hiking

HIKING

There are plenty of easier and more advanced treks through the mountains and jungles that you can do while staying in Fiji. Possibly the most accessible hike is the one that goes to Tavuni Hill Fort on Viti Levu. The Fort is of historical significance as it used to be the site of a fortified village. The views of the Sigatoka River from the bluff at the top of the hike are breathtaking.

Sightseeing

SIGHTSEEING

Take a ferry or small boat to the historical capital city Levuka, on nearby Ovalau Island, or visit Fiji’s current capital city of Suva, which is only a few hours from the project site. Suva is known for its markets, nightlife, laidback atmosphere and the highly interesting artifacts at the Fiji Museum, where you can learn about Fiji’s cannibal past and indigenous tribal art.

Travel further afield

TRAVEL FURTHER AFIELD

There’s something for everyone traveling through Fiji. For shopaholics, there’s the town of Nadi’s bustling market; if you’re looking to relax, the hot springs at Sabeto should do the trick. Sports nuts can attend a rugby match for a taste of local atmosphere, and adrenalin-junkies can dive with bull sharks in Bega Lagoon, which is one of the world’s most renowned shark dive sites. If you’ve got the luxury of a lot of time, you can go island-hopping around the 20 volcanic Yasawa islands, where you will be wowed by their breathtakingly clear waters and white-sand beaches. There’s even a wildlife park on Fiji – Kula Eco Park will give you a safari experience in an island paradise.
