Research Africa's big cats in the Maasai Mara and get a chance to witness one of the greatest wildlife spectacles, the annual wildebeest migration. Assist in the conservation efforts of the Naboisho Conservancy by monitoring wildlife and conducting important research. The loss of wildlife in the area has been devastating in recent years due to increased human settlement in and around the Masai Mara. As a wildlife volunteer, you will go out on research drives to do game counts, document big cat sightings, locate big cats for the reserve’s tourists (thereby increasing the attraction of the reserve as a tourist destination, which helps keep the conservancy running in the long term), and you will assist with teaching and other development work in the local community.

010

As a volunteer, you will get to:

  • Volunteer in the Maasai Mara - the greatest safari destination in the world!
  • Research and monitor big cats (lions, leopards and cheetahs) in their natural environment.
  • Experience living in the wild in a remote authentic safari camp.
  • Learn and gain new skills from our Maasai guides as you collect crucial data on wildlife numbers in the field.
  • Play a huge role in conservation by assisting with ongoing conservation initiatives like creating waterholes, building erosion fences and controling soil erosion.
  • Empower the Maasai community by working alongside the Koyaiki Guiding School, which trains young Maasai students to be safari guides.
  • Educate the local communities to value their precious enviornment through conservation education.

Work & Impacts

Big cat monitoring

BIG CAT MONITORING

The Maasai Mara has healthy population of all three large African cats: lion, leopard and cheetah. As a volunteer you will monitor all of these species on a daily basis for the purpose of supporting conservancy managment, as we seek to balance the needs of the traditional pastoralists, tourism and wildlife. You will also be actively engaged in an exciting and pioneering leopard population survey.

Wildlife counts

WILDLIFE COUNTS

There is a great need for consistent and accurate collection of data on wildlife in the conservancy, including regular game counts. Under the guidance of our experienced team, you will assist in regular data collection in order to measure the progress of the conservancy.

Conservation work

CONSERVATION WORK

Volunteers also play a key role in conservation projects like road identification, erosion control, alien plant removal, as well as recording new species and wildlife monitoring.

Education and teaching

EDUCATION AND TEACHING

The Koiyaki Guiding School is geared toward molding local young Masai’s to be future tour guides. Your voluntary teaching involvement will be appreciated in teaching the local school children about wildlife and how to speak English, plus it will give you plenty of great memories of just chatting to them about all kinds of topics.

Elephant knowledge

Elephant knowledge

In partnership with Elephant Voices we aim to build a network of knowledge about elephants in the Maasai Mara ecosystem, working together to monitor and protect them. Volunteers will be responsible for taking ID photos of elephants, getting to know them individually and collecting observations on the location, size and composition of the groups.

Feedback from our volunteers

CHARLOTTE BLACKWOOD, UK

"One word - amazing . I stayed here for 2 weeks in July 2013 and have my return trip booked for July 2014. The whole experience was fantastic, the wildlife and landscape is breath-taking. The people so humble. Our accommodation was good and food beautiful. Each and every day is so different you just don't know what you are going to see. My best part has to be the lion monitoring - just sat photographing the magnificent creatures watching them play or sleep. I made some amazing friends and look forward to my return trip to make some more memories."

BARBARA FITZGIBBON, IRELAND

"I have had the privilege of being involved on two separate occasions with this Project, and it was wonderful to witness its growth and development over the intervening months. What makes this project special is the blend of differing but complimentary activities, and the humbling experience of absorbing the rich Masai culture and its struggle for survival. Being based at Koiyaki Guiding School and interacting with the inspiring students there was a highlight for me, as well as the regular monitoring of diverse and abundant game. Working with the primary school children on the Environmental Club was a moving and heart-warming activity. It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I would highly recommend it: age is not a barrier!"

HYUN KWON (ROCHELLE), SOUTH KOREA

"This project is SUPERB and AMAZING. Every moment that we spent is unforgettable and priceless. The life pattern and life style here as well as environment are totally different from where I have lived. I took all these things with positive curiosity and interests, as these are not easily experienced. The best thing about this project is combination. This project involves conservation work and community work. Also the staff members are really well organised and prepared for every situation and they have a lot of helpful information. I really had a gorgeous time with everyone and unforgettable moments. I don’t know how to thank to everyone what I feel. Thank you so much!!"
