Picture-perfect Playa del Carmen is a coastal resort town in Mexico. Set on the Yucatán Peninsula's Riviera Maya strip of Caribbean shoreline, it’s known for its exquisite palm-lined beaches, coral reefs and scuba-diving opportunities.
Your volunteer accommodation is downtown of the central area, about 15 minutes away by cheap and reliable public buses.
Men and women live in shared accommodation with shared bathrooms in a house, flat or studio. There is running water, but it’s best to stick to bottled water for drinking. Volunteers cook their own meals in the on-site facilities.
Use your free time – one or two days a week – to explore the area nearby and consider tacking on some extra travel time on either side of your volunteer program to tour a little further afield.
You’ll have good access to long-distance communications – most volunteers buy a local SIM card or a cheap local cellphone to use during their stay. Internet cafes are also very easy to find near the volunteer accommodation.
Working with animals can be physically and emotionally demanding, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. If you’re looking to do some good for both the humans and animals in this small community while living in one of Mexico’s most beautiful areas, then this project is for you.
