Work & Impacts

This volunteer opportunity is perfect for those with a passion for animal welfare. Explore lively Central America, live in the vibey Caribbean town of Playa del Carmen and go snorkeling in warm tropical waters – all while providing vital assistance to local veterinarians.

As a volunteer on this project, run by the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) and Coco’s Animal Welfare, your charges will be of the four-legged kind, with most of them being cats and dogs. You’ll be closely involved in raising awareness on pet care and population control in disadvantaged communities where this sort of education is limited.

Volunteers are given all necessary training before getting hands-on experience in the field – if you’re already skilled in anything related to veterinary care, please let us know when you apply. A basic knowledge of Spanish will enrich your overall experience as you’ll be able to immerse yourself into the community.

Your duties will be varied and might involve seemingly mundane tasks like keeping facilities clean, tidy and hygienic but you’ll also get to help prepare pets for sterilization surgeries and assist in their post-op care and recovery at various local clinics.

Promoting pet sterilization

PROMOTING PET STERILIZATION

Your project tasks and duties will largely depend on your skills. On the one hand, you could be involved in educating the local community on the importance of sterilizing their pets, while other volunteers will get to assist local vets in preparing for these surgical procedures.

Caring for sick and injured animals

CARING FOR SICK AND INJURED ANIMALS

You will be involved in receiving and delivering dogs and cats and helping in the clinic’s recovery area. You’ll assist in animal care by cutting their nails, cleaning their ears and removing ticks

Community work

COMMUNITY WORK

Your day-to-day duties could also involve going out into the local community to conduct animal welfare surveys or leading educational workshops. You’ll also get the chance to work on fundraising activities in support of the project.

Animal play and socialization

ANIMAL PLAY AND SOCIALIZATION

No matter your other duties, you’ll always be encouraged to play and interact with the younger animals to help in socializing them and eventually finding them loving new homes.

Fun & Travel

Things to do in your spare time

Long-term field staff working with the Playa del Carmen project are a great source of advice and can give you tips on all sorts, from must-visit tourist highlights to discounts on nearby activities.

Go downtown

GO DOWNTOWN

Take a stroll down Quinta Avenida and stop to have a drink and something to eat. Called 5th Avenue in English, this is tropical Playa’s main tourist thoroughfare and the pedestrian-only, cobblestone-lined street covers about 20 blocks of restaurants, bars, clubs and shopping opportunities.

Take a dive

TAKE A DIVE

Playa del Carmen is a scuba-diver’s paradise! There are plenty of diving and snorkeling opportunities along this stretch of coast, although the offshore reefs are accessible by boat only. It’s worth the trek though – this is the second largest coral reef system in the world.

Back to nature

BACK TO NATURE

Don’t miss the opportunity to take in the natural splendor away from the seashore. Join one of the local eco-tour companies on a day trip to beautiful remote places like Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve, just an hour away from Playa del Carmen, and home to a dazzling array of birdlife and a healthy population of the extremely shy jaguar.

Snorkel with turtles

SNORKEL WITH TURTLES

Head about half an hour south from Playa del Carmen to the Bay of Akumal, where you can snorkel with green sea turtles just meters from the shore. Watch them swim about their natural habit or witness their nesting rituals in the summertime.

Exlpore mayan temples

EXLPORE MAYAN TEMPLES

As if all this wasn’t enough, Playa del Carmen is also at the heart of Mexico’s rich Mayan history. Take some time to visit at least one of the great Mayan cities and ruins nearby, which include Chichen Itza, Tulum, Coba and Ek Balam.

Volunteers staying for more than just a few weeks can really immerse themselves in the local culture by taking classes to learn how to communicate in Spanish.

ABOUT PLAYA DEL CARMEN

Playadelcarmen

About the Destination

Picture-perfect Playa del Carmen is a coastal resort town in Mexico. Set on the Yucatán Peninsula's Riviera Maya strip of Caribbean shoreline, it’s known for its exquisite palm-lined beaches, coral reefs and scuba-diving opportunities.

Your volunteer accommodation is downtown of the central area, about 15 minutes away by cheap and reliable public buses.

Men and women live in shared accommodation with shared bathrooms in a house, flat or studio. There is running water, but it’s best to stick to bottled water for drinking. Volunteers cook their own meals in the on-site facilities.

Use your free time – one or two days a week – to explore the area nearby and consider tacking on some extra travel time on either side of your volunteer program to tour a little further afield.

You’ll have good access to long-distance communications – most volunteers buy a local SIM card or a cheap local cellphone to use during their stay. Internet cafes are also very easy to find near the volunteer accommodation.

Working with animals can be physically and emotionally demanding, but it’s also incredibly rewarding. If you’re looking to do some good for both the humans and animals in this small community while living in one of Mexico’s most beautiful areas, then this project is for you.
