Make a serious and measureable impact on the lives of communities in Nepal by providing disaster relief after the 2015 earthquake in the city of Pokhara. You’ll join an international team of volunteers in renovating, repairing and building basic infrastructure and educational facilities, while having the opportunity to explore this fascinating, landlocked mountainous Asian country in your free time. If you have a desire to really make a difference, and to be able to clearly see how your contribution has helped those less privileged than yourself, this is a fantastic project for you.

  • Play an invaluable role in improving the lives of underprivileged communities in the wake of the 2015 earthquake.
  • Take part in varied, interesting, rewarding activities that will either refurbish or establish community infrastructure.
  • Stay in shape through doing physical labor and/or exercise your creativity in brightening up schools, orphanages and other facilities, making them more pleasant and more stimulating.
  • Learn about building and construction through the training you will receive at the beginning of your stay.
  • Live in Nepal, a traveler’s wonderland, where there is adventure and mystique around every corner of the incredible landscape.
  • Experience authentic Nepali village life while living with a host family.
  • Work alongside local masons and other community members, learning about their building methods and techniques as well as local culture and traditions.
  • Meet fellow volunteers who share your passion to help those less fortunate than yourself.

Work & Impacts

Construction

CONSTRUCTION

You will be required to do whatever is needed by way of building, refurbishment, repairs and renovation of facilities, including orphanages and schools, in the villages and towns in the surrounds of the city of Pokhara. The work will be physically demanding, so you should be prepared to exert yourself and should be reasonably fit. You will be doing this kind of work from Monday to Friday.

Decorating

DECORATING

Schools in Nepal are very basic, but you may have the opportunity to make them more stimulating as learning environments by getting out the brushes and palettes to brighten up the paintwork.

Fun & Travel

Things to do in your spare time

Sightseeing

SIGHTSEEING

You will visit the Tal Bahari temple, situation in the middle of the Fewa Tal Lake, surrounded by the Annapurna mountain range, during your orientation.

Local culture

LOCAL CULTURE

You will get to really immerse yourself in the local culture and traditions by attending local Nepali language lessons and cooking during your stay.

Adventure sports

ADVENTURE SPORTS

Nepal is an adrenalin junkie’s dream! Why not try a two-day rafting trip on the white water of Seti or Trisuli Rivers? Or paraglide over the spectacular scenery of the Himalayas … Or go mountain biking, canyoning or bungee-jumping! No matter how you want to get your adrenalin pumping, Nepal has an adventure to offer you.

Hiking

HIKING

You can’t stay in the Himalayas without going trekking or hiking. The Annapurna mountain range is the closest to Pokhara, and a four-day trek through these summits will bring you into direct contact with the people living in the Himalayas’ remote mountain villages.

Safari

SAFARI

“Really? In Nepal?”, you might be thinking. Yes, it’s true – on a three-day safari in the Chitwan National Park, you have the chance to catch sight of rare rhinos and tigers while on game drives in the wilderness.

Travel further afield

TRAVEL FURTHER AFIELD

The biggest regret most travelers have about visiting Nepal is that they didn’t stay longer. There is so much to see – from the ancient temples of Tansen to the markets of Kathmandu to Everest Base Camp to the ancient Hindu center of Janakpur to the foothills of the Himalayas in Langtang National Park. After your volunteer work is done, these and so many more sights can be on your travel agenda.

ABOUT POKHARA

About pokhara

About the Destination

This project is based in the city of Pokhara, the second-largest in Nepal after the capital of Kathmandu. Pokhara is the gateway to a lot of Nepal’s famed adventure sports, such as paragliding and trekking the Annapurna mountain range. This makes it a popular tourist destination, so you are likely to bump into plenty of other Westerners during your stay, even though most of your time will be spent with local villagers and community members.

While on-project, you will stay in a homestay with a Nepali family, in shared bedrooms and bathrooms with other volunteers. You will get the rare opportunity to have an authentic Nepali experience. The food served will be typical Nepali cuisine with a few familiar Western favourites – expect vegetable curry, beans, rice and pasta.

You can also choose to stay in private accommodation, although, for many volunteers, staying in shared accommodation in a homestay is one of their highlights of this project. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity – very few people ever get such an authentic experience of the daily life of a Nepali community.

Feedback from our volunteers

CAROL BROMELL, UK

“Well what do I say about my time in Nepal but the only word I can use is magical. From the time you arrive at the airport in Kathmandu till the time you leave, you are looked after superbly. The activities that go along with the volunteering are amazing, the trek, rafting and the visit to Chitwan. All the staff and fellow volunteers I met during my time in Nepal were so friendly and supportive; you really feel part of the family.”
