Living in the heart of South Africa’s most famous wildlife area and joining our guides and research staff on daily game drives, volunteers on this project play a vital role in the monitoring and study of Africa’s ‘Big 5‘ animals – the leopard, lion, buffalo, rhino and elephant. Contributing to on-going conservation initiatives, you will assist local wildlife foundations to protect endangered and at-risk species in this spectacular region and live very close to the world-famous Kruger National Park.

Volunteers on this project will get to:

  •  Actively play a role in the protection and conservation of endangered and at-risk African species, including the ‘Big 5’ animals through monitoring, observations and data collection that support the long-term research initiatives of nearby wildlife trusts and foundations.
  • Assist in key research initiatives, such as lion, elephant, rhino and leopard ID kits, learning tracking skills and mapping animal movements that help create animal management plans for future preservation of the Big 5 animals in the area.
  • You will also get very hands on in conservation activities on reserves in the area. This may include the removal of alien plant species, the creation of waterhole / wetlands, road clearing and litter collection which is vital to the healthy running of a game reserve.
  • Share your own understanding of topical issues and gain new-found knowledge of the surrounding ecosystem, the important roles that different species play in that ecosystem and how to conserve it
  • Spend your days in the bush on game drives or bush walks, learning more about Africa's Big 5 animals and ticking off your bucket list!
  • Live in one of Africa’s top wildlife locations, surrounded by spectacular scenery and things to do in your free time!

Work & Impacts

Research

Research and Data Collection

On daily research drives you will be actively involved in gathering important data on the wild animals in the area by monitoring their movements and behavior and feeding this research to local wildlife foundations and trusts. By capturing that data, as well as external data on the environment and human interaction, this allows us to identify patterns that will help with future conservation initiatives and assist the management team at each reserve. As well as this, you will also learn how to complete animal ID kits, which identify the animals we regularly see and monitor their behavior on a long-term basis, which means that you are part of an on-going and valuable program.

Physical conservation work

Game Reserve Duties

Living on a game reserve can be very physical and challenging, but is highly rewarding. In order to actively assist the game reserves we work with, staff and volunteers are also needed to get very hands on in work that maintains the healthy ecosystem for its wildlife and conservation initiatives. Activities volunteers will be involved in will vary depending on the needs of the location, but could include fixing the perimeter fencing, checking for snares, removing alien vegetation and clearing the bush, as well as managing waterholes and erosion control. It certainly can be challenging, but it’s an amazing way to bond with your fellow volunteers and it’s hugely rewarding to see the immediate impact you are having on the ecosystem.

Project work

Project Work

As well as actually collecting data on the Big 5 animals, you will also have an opportunity to work on data that has already been collected, which will be entered and used in the research lab for further analysis of long-term behaviors or trends seen out in the field. Through compiling ID kits, mapping territories, creating animal guides, tracking sightings of specific species and game count reports, you will be contributing to much wider goals of game reserve management. Through this research, management can help establish healthy ecosystems for their wildlife to flourish and help create conservation plans which will aim to preserve the populations of the species. Through this, you will gain a huge understanding of the work both staff and volunteers do on these reserves and make your impact on Africa’s Big 5.

Things to do in your spare time

Relax

Relax

During your evenings and weekends, after a long, but exciting day’s work, there are plenty of ways to relax! Take a dip in the pool, enjoy a drink at the bar or hold a movie night or games night with other volunteers. There are also plenty of opportunities for you to learn more about the environment where you are living, in the form of presentations and workshops by staff to improve your understanding of the local ecosystem and animals that you work with. Aside from workshops, we’ve also been known to hold a number of fundraising events, quiz nights and fun events nights!

Get out and about

Get out and about

You will have lots of free time at the weekends and therefore it’s a great opportunity for you to head further afield and going on some exciting adventures in the local area, taking in the spectacular scenery. You are very close to some iconic locations, such as the Kruger National Park where you can go on endless safari’s and even take a hot air balloon over the bush, or if you want to tick another country off your bucket list, head to Swaziland for the weekend!

Get educated

Get Educated

Our staff regularly hold presentations that volunteers are more than welcome to attend, discussing cultural issues, our aims and achievements, poaching debates and many, many more. These workshops are held by staff members but welcome volunteers to create one themselves, especially if they’re particularly knowledgeable in an area they’d like to share with others. We love sharing our knowledge with you and these are a great opportunity to learn more.

About your project location

About the Destination

Situated in the heart of South Africa’s most famous ‘Big 5’ area, this project is a paradise for those wanting to escape into the African bush and spend their time surrounded by nature and wildlife, as you live in the Greater Kruger Area, home to the world-famous Kruger National Park. This beautiful landscape serves as home to many of Africa’s most magnificent, yet at-risk animals, including lions, elephants, leopards, antelope, the endangered rhino and many, many more, including a huge diversity of birdlife.

During your time volunteering you will be living on a private game reserve, in a lodge that has access to a beautiful swimming pool, entertainment area and lots of space to enjoy the outdoors. The lodge will be your home for the entirety of your time with us and you will then spend each day departing from here to visit nearby game reserves and facilities where you will be volunteering.

There is no better way to experience wildlife in Africa than participating in conservation volunteering, making a positive impact on both the wildlife and the local communities that they share the area with and after a hard day’s work, there is plenty do in your free time.

Spend evenings around a fire under the stunning African night sky; enjoy relaxing on your room balcony or by the pool bar; sit in the lounge and surf the web; enjoy the delicious food produced by our excellent catering team; or why not take a stroll around the property enjoying your own slice of Africa. If you want to head further afield, take an overnight camping trip in the bush or scenic drive with the most spectacular views of South Africa – whatever you choose, we look forward to welcoming you to the lodge and to the team!

Feedback from our volunteers

Stephanie Schaefer, America

"It's changed everything. It has made me want to travel more and come back to Africa. I thought I had my whole life figured out but this showed me that there is so much more that I can do. I've met amazing people from all over the world that I want to see again, and I'm a much more confident, adventurous, and positive person now."

Danielle Contrada, USA

"My time on project has been an unforgettable experience. Being heavily involved in research and being able to see wildlife up close has been an absolute dream come true!"

Brian Marnoch, UK

"I came on this project with no expectations, only with the open mind and positive attitude as listed in the pre booking details. Whilst on drives and Klaserie trips I never at any stage had concern for my safety and was entirely comfortable in the knowledge and experience of all the staff and guides. I cannot explain how fully satisfied and fulfilled I now feel having taken the step to come on my first volunteering trip and would fully recommend this to anyone thinking about this sort of break."

Alex Dibnah, UK

"From drives and data collection, to hacking away at bamboo with machetes in a crocodile enclosure or sicklebush; from endless hours of project work to camping out in a big five game reserve, there really is an endless list of things to do here and surrounded by such amazing people in one of the most amazing and beautiful countries in the world, volunteering is the definition of the clichéd phrase "experience of a lifetime"."
