Volunteer to teach English in local schools in the exquisite Andaman region of Thailand, and you’ll not only play a role in improving the future prospects of many rural children, but you’ll also get to explore the white-sand beaches and tropical jungle nearby while learning about local culture. This is an experience that so many tourists to Thailand miss out on, and, as a volunteer, you’ll gain a unique insight into the way of life of local villagers while improving the children’s English language skills – giving them a better chance of securing a good job in the area’s growing tourism industry future and breaking the cycle of poverty. If you are passionate about education and community involvement in rural communities, and also want to experience a lifestyle in a world very different to your own, this project is perfect for you.

Face painting

As a volunteer, you’ll get to:

  • Be directly involved in the education of the village’s schoolchildren, helping them to improve their English reading, writing, listening and speaking through classroom lessons as well as games to improve their conversational English.
  • Play an invaluable role in the children’s future success when it comes to securing jobs in the tourism industry.
  • Assist local teachers with classroom management where student numbers are very high and classrooms tend to be overcrowded.
  • Engage the local community in ways to improve their quality of life overall and to preserve their unique culture.
  • Live in one of the most unspoiled, beautiful places on Earth.
  • Spend time in the crystal-clear waters of the ocean, on idyllic beaches, and exploring nearby natural phenomena such as limestone rock formations and caves.
  • Learn about Thai culture, including how to cook traditional food and speak basic Thai.
  • Meet fellow volunteers who share your desire to make a real difference in rural communities in Asia and the world.

Work & Impacts

Teaching

TEACHING

From Monday to Friday, you will either give your own English lessons – which involves lesson planning and preparation, and focusing on one of the four skills necessary in learning another language, namely reading, writing, listening and speaking – or assist and support local teachers in the classroom during their own lessons, depending on your interests, abilities and experience.

Outside of the classroom, you will also be expected to plan and implement games and other fun activities that can stimulate the children’s conversational English in an authentic, “free” environment.

Community involvement english

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: ENGLISH

You will also be given plenty of chance to practice English with the wider community. They don’t get many opportunities to practice their speaking with more fluent and/or native English speakers, and your presence offers them a great way to improve their pronunciation, grammar and vocabulary. All of this helps them to take advantage of the growing tourist numbers in their area and to possibly derive an income from the tourism industry.

Community involvement culture

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT: CULTURE

This project aims to help the local communities to preserve their unique culture and traditions in the modern world. Your role as a volunteer in this area will be to learn as much as you can from the villagers about their local customs, cuisine, language and daily life. Don’t be afraid to ask them to teach you how to cook their traditional dishes or speak conversational Thai. Along with adding to your own language and skills sets, you will also be encouraging the community members to keep their traditional way of life alive.

Fun & Travel

Things to do in your spare time

Journey into the jungle

JOURNEY INTO THE JUNGLE

The nearby Khao Sok National Park gives you the opportunity to spot elephants, leopards, tigers (if you’re very lucky!), deer, birds, monkeys and the unique Rafflesia, the largest flower in the world – which also happens to be the flower with the worst aroma! Whether you visit the park as a day visitor or if you stay overnight in one of the jungle tree houses or a bungalow that floats on Cheow Larn Lake, you are guaranteed an adventure. You can go trekking through the jungle, kayak on the lake, swim in waterfalls or simply sit back and observe the rainforest wildlife.

A little luxury

A LITTLE LUXURY

Visit the popular Khao Lak nearby if you’re after endless beaches, excellent restaurants, spa massages and treatments and a stay in a luxury resort.

Island style

ISLAND STYLE

Go diving or snorkeling in the nearby Similan and Surin Island groups for some of the best marine wildlife you’ll ever see. Go surfing in Phuket or cruise around the Phang Nga Bay by sea kayak. All of these ocean activities are relatively close to the project base and pretty easily accessible.

Go crazy in krabi

GO CRAZY IN KRABI

The neighboring province of Krabi holds many treasures for tourists – from the views at the Tiger Temple Cave to the stunning scenery of the Than Bok Khoranee National Park to the bustling nightlife of Ao Nang to the laidback beach vibes of Ko Lanta to the epic parties on Phi Phi Island. There really is something for every kind of traveler in Krabi.

Travel further afield

TRAVEL FURTHER AFIELD

There is no shortage of exciting trips to be taken within Thailand – including to the beaches of Ko Tao and Phuket; the spectacular waterfalls of the Khao Yai National Park; the temples, markets and nightlife in Bangkok; and the “golden kingdom” of Ayuthaya.

ABOUT PHANG NGA

About phang nga

About the Destination

This project is located in the Phang Nga province on the Andaman Coast in southern Thailand.

You will live in the village on the project base, which is small but comfortable. Facilities are shared, but there is plenty of space for volunteers to relax together or in private. There is cold running water, electricity and internet connectivity.

You will receive authentic Thai meals cooked on-site – they will be simple but delicious.

If you would prefer not to share a room, private accommodation can be arranged. But don’t underestimate the sense of community and cheer that you could get from sharing the project base with like-minded volunteers from all over the world! For many volunteers, this is one of the highlights of the project.

Feedback from our volunteers

JODIE MARTIN, UK

"Life on base was something that worried me before I arrived. Sharing a bedroom with 11 others, living out of a backpack and no hot water? How was I going to cope? I can honestly say that life on base is great. Everyone works hard to keep the camp clean and tidy and it really does feel like home. It’s nice to get back from a hard day at school and just chill out with everyone and share stories. I have made friends from all over the world and have never laughed so much in my life."
