Work & Impacts

Lion conservation

Research

As a research base for the African lion, a variety of research initiatives are conducted to better understand lion behavior and ecology and ultimately help the conservation of the species. You will play an important role in collecting and analysing data which is then used in making decisions for the animal’s welfare and release. Depending on the needs of the project at the time, the studies will vary and will also include opportunities to get involved in wider initiatives such as working with elephants. You will join teams that help to track elephants, record locations, group sizes, behavior and feeding patterns and this is an amazing way to leave your impact on Africa.

Conservation

Conservation

As well as spending a lot of time researching lions, you will also get to play a role in their care, including preparing food, cleaning enclosures and assisting our staff with their day to day duties. You will also get extremely involved in conservation education, working with local schools in the area to inspire young people to get passionate about wildlife, discussing conservation initiatives and providing fun sessions where you can share your love for animals.

Adventure Activities

Living in a World Heritage Site means there is endless activities to get involved in during your spare time. On your doorstep sits the magnificent Victoria Falls, one of the 7 Wonders of the World, so as well as spending time there you can also get involved in any of the adventure activities nearby; white water rafting in the world-famous Zambezi river, bungee jumping, gorge jumps, boat cruises along the river or even a helicopter flight over the waterfalls which is an unforgettable experience. The area is known as a ‘playground’ for those wanting to tick off their bucket list so you better get started!

Wildlife

Wildlife

As well as the local town of Livingstone where volunteers can explore, the area is also surrounded by wildlife opportunities, so whether that is in your own back yard of the volunteer house or spotting elephants on the banks of the Zambezi river, you will spend every day surrounded by nature. Of course, you will be spending a lot of time with the lions during your time volunteering, but that doesn’t stop you from heading out on safari’s at the weekend to spot many of the other Big 5 or even taking an overnight trip to camp in the bush!

About Livingstone

About livingstone

About the Destination

Living in a World Heritage Site, home to the magnificent Victoria Falls (One of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World), volunteers on this project are based in the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, away from the noise and the bustle of the nearby towns and surrounded by beautiful woodlands and open plains filled with many of Africa’s most magnificent wildlife; giraffe, elephants, rhinos, antelope and zebras, just to name a few.

Living in dorm-style accommodation in a simple, but charming volunteer accommodation, you will be able to spend your free time exploring the local area or after a long, but rewarding day’s work, why not relax at the house with your fellow volunteers? You can enjoy a quiet night under the stars, enjoying the sounds of nearby Victoria Falls and the animals in the bush or alternatively why not arrange an events night, whether that is a quiz or a games night!

If adventure is more your thing, there are plenty of activities for you to get involved in and the nearby town of Livingstone is the ultimate playground for those who like to live on the wild side! Whether it’s bungee jumping, white water rafting, braving the gorge swing or heading out on boat cruises or safari’s, there are endless opportunities here to tick off your bucket list!

Feedback from our volunteers

Margaret Hatezic, Australia

I wanted to let you know that the experience I had with you in Zambia was truly a cliched "once in a life time" experience. Being able to work with the lions and being a very small part of a very big and honourable cause is something I will treasure for life.

I admire you for being able to deal with people from all walks of life, from all corners of the globe, of all ages with a multitude of cultural attitudes thrown in.

Marie-Helene Hardouin, France

Spending some time with the lions was the most amazing experience of my life. Being part of this project was a privilege I will never forget!

Paula Mannu, UK

I feel this is an excellent program, both in helping with the lion re-population issue and the help given to the local community. I have gained a feeling of true self satisfaction in helping with the lion project and great esteem for the work in the local villages. It was awesome to see the smiles on the faces of the children at the schools.
