Join the World Volunteering team in the ‘Adventure Centre’ of Southern Africa and bring hope and health support to a community where medical resources are limited. Your involvement on this project will change lives and help support local healthcare initiatives in rural communities.

604

Healthcare institutions in Zambia suffer from being under-staffed and under-resourced. Therefore World Volunteering works with various clinics to deliver the maximum benefit of healthcare and education.

Volunteers will:

  • Participate in health promotion activities, such as health and nutrition education using approved syllabus guidelines.
  • Conduct HIV Education within the communities of Livingstone where the disease affects vast portions of the population.
  • Accompany caregivers to provide home based care to members of the community in need.
  • Help alleviate the busy workload of staff by assisting with non-clinical duties in local clinics, and gain valuable healthcare experience by observing patient care being provided by local staff.
  • Help provide support for the residents in the local old people’s home.
  • Work on building and construction projects within the community.
  • Work on community-based projects (art, mathematics or reading clubs in the local schools, working in the local old People’s Home, helping on community farms or teaching English to adults).
  • Immerse yourself in local Zambian culture.
  • Visit the majestic Victoria Falls, also known as “The Smoke that Thunders” and enjoy some of the amazing tourist activities that Livingstone has to offer.

Work & Impacts

Homebased care

Home-based care

Community caregivers across Livingstone carry out home visits to patients, many of whom suffer from serious illnesses such as HIV/AIDS, TB, and malaria. Our volunteers accompany the caregivers and help to provide Home Based Care (HBC). The aim is to give comfort, education and treatment advice to members of the community who are between clinic visits, or find it difficult to access the clinics. Listening to patient’s stories with an empathetic ear is an invaluable way to provide comfort and support as a volunteer. Talking to patients about the importance of hygiene, a healthy diet and exercise is often an important part of this healthcare service.

Health nutrition community education

Health & nutrition community education

Volunteers assist in conducting community education about HIV, health and nutrition topics using approved syllabuses, with the help of local staff to translate. We believe education is vital so that community members have the knowledge and ability to make healthy lifestyle choices within the context of their environment.

Please note: some of our health education workshops are not available to all volunteers. Participants will be carefully selected at the project managers’ discretion based on criteria such as age, maturity and ability to communicate effectively in English.

Clinics

Clinics

Clinics in Livingstone battle with serious shortages of staff and basic medical equipment. The help of volunteers is greatly appreciated by the nurses, as their assistance with tasks, such as filing of patient records, allows them to see and treat the vast numbers of people more quickly. Volunteers have the opportunity to observe patient care being provided by local staff in several Livingstone clinics, which provides valuable insight into healthcare services in Zambia. The clinics have several departments, including outpatients for adults and children, HIV and TB services, pharmacy and maternity.

Maramba old peoples home

Maramba old people's home

This home is poorly funded by the government and most residents have no family or caregivers to look after them. Volunteers provide a friendly face and an opportunity to chat for people who seldom have interaction with others outside the home. Sometimes, volunteers conduct health talks about personal hygiene and health with the elderly residents, and may also assist staff with encouraging mobility and weighing residents.

Community projects

Community projects

Volunteers will spend their afternoons helping the local community various programs. You will rotate between the following community projects:

Building: volunteers will help with mixing cement, making and laying bricks, laying concrete floors, plastering walls, and painting, or refurbishing existing classrooms, since many schools in Livingstone have limited classrooms available.

Farming: we aim to help communities set up sustainable farming programs, and provide assistance in preparing the land and maintaining the crops.

Reading club: volunteers assist in running afterschool reading clubs to support the development of literacy and reading skills amongst Livingstone’s youth.

Art club: during this afternoon session you have a chance to nurture the students’ creativity. You will plan out art clubs using suggested themes and creative ideas.

Adult literacy club: in conjunction with the Ministry of Education, volunteers work with adults in the community to help improve their literacy rate and subsequently their chances of employment.

Afterschool clubs: volunteers run structured playtimes with children at pre-selected locations, taking along balls, jump ropes, colouring books and crayons. This time allows children just to be children, to play games, be carefree and expend some of their boundless energy.

About the Destination

Livingstone, Zambia is a beautiful, rural town that many call “the real Africa.” Just a stone’s throw away from one of the 7 Natural Wonders of the World - Victoria Falls - Livingstone is the ultimate playground for those who love adventure sports, wildlife and the great outdoors. Whether you bungee jump, swim in the 'Devil’s Pool', feed some crocodiles, white water raft down the mighty Zambezi or just enjoy a breath-taking sunset, you will experience things that only Livingstone can offer! Don’t worry, you will certainly not miss out on wildlife. There are many national parks where you can observe lions, rhinos, hippos, crocodiles, elephants and giraffes and often, we spot some of these animals along the road on our way to project!

You’ll be staying in a private volunteer house within the popular and welcoming Livingstone Backpackers.  You will have access to a lovely swimming pool, hot tub, lounge and bar area and if that wasn’t enough, a full climbing wall as well! Your accommodation is a 5 minute walk away from Livingstone's town center, which has many stores and a great selection of bars and restaurants. The house is mixed gender, but males and females will be sleeping in separate rooms. You won’t want to leave your “new home” as the staff will become your new family!

Feedback from our volunteers

LAUREN BELYEA, USA

"I feel so enriched and really opened my eyes to what healthcare is like for people around the world.. and all of it's discrepancies! I feel saddened about the living conditions, yet very heart warmed by the reactions I received helping the Zambians. It makes me appreciate all that I have, and the healthcare system I work for back home."

SPENCER HAYASHI, USA

This is my first time volunteering with World Volunteering and I have nothing but positive things to say about my trip. My friendship developed with the staff, fellow volunteers, and local Zambians created an environment where I felt immediately welcomed.

Projects were productive and easy to prepare for, with the backpackers providing a great place to relax while not out on the town. I have full confidence in the welcoming personas of the current World Volunteering staff that will continue to provide the best volunteer experience possible.

JASMINE KIDD, NEW ZEALAND

"I am more aware of things I used to take for granted. I also appreciate the positivity and friendliness of the Zambian locals. I would like to return to Africa and experience this again in the future. I feel I'm more aware of the situations and living conditions of the Zambian people. I would recommend this to all."

SOFIA ZAROD, UK

It has been my first time in Africa and the whole experience has been more than I could have even imagined. We all hear about how people are living in third world countries but you can never really try to understand the reality of it until you get to see even a tiny aspect of life in Africa.

Meeting all the amazing people and being part of the projects has given me so much perspective which I feel I’ll have for life. What I have seen here is not something I will leave behind and just forget about when I get back home, Its probably been the most profound experience I’ve had and it will definitely change what I do in the future, I can’t wait to come back!
